“On this day the Lord has acted.  We will rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

After dropping my girls off at school one recent morning I stopped by the local Starbucks to grab a morning coffee.  As I got out of my car I noticed that the sun was just starting to rise and the sky was a beautiful light baby blue color with a hint of purple, red, and orange.  This was a slight surprise because it was late in the fall season but still before the time change so most mornings I had dropped the girls off at school and was at the church building working long before the light started to shine, but on this morning I was greeted by a beautiful sun rise reminding me that God’s mercies are new every morning.

A few months ago we bought a new house and it’s been a true blessing to our lives.  We were lucky to find one move in ready; one of the few projects that needed to be done was to re-stain the back deck.  All summer long I kept reminding myself to stain the deck, and I kept putting it off.  I finally decided a few weeks ago I had to get it done before winter so even though October is not typical deck staining time, I set to work.  The first afternoon I worked it was bitter cold and I was freezing, but then we had a week of unseasonably warm fall weather and I was able to get the majority of it done while it was nice outside.  Maybe it was coincidence, but I thank God for the beautiful weather.

A few weeks ago I took my high school bible class outside to spend some time meditating on God.  When we got outside the sun was beating down on us and I could hear the students moan, “I’m hot, this is miserable, I hate being outside.”  I kept thinking it will be alright, just give them time.  But as the sweat started to drip down my brow I started to think, maybe I made a mistake, its way too hot, there’s no way we’ll experience God today.  At just that moment a cool breeze rippled across the field and as I enjoyed the momentary relief from the heat I couldn’t help but smile as God was showing up even when I was giving up hope and giving me a reminder of his presence that I won’t soon forget.

At times I fear we spend too much time looking for God wondering where he is when in reality God is right in front of us all the time.  We look for God in the big and exciting ways.  We want cancer cured, we want debt erased, we want world hunger stopped.  And God sometimes works in those ways.  We have all heard stories of the cancer patient who goes into the doctor for a scan and amazingly the cancer is gone.  We can all share of times when we received an unexpected check or bonus at just the right time to pay a bill.  God is active in all of those things.  But God is also active in so many little ways everyday.  From a beautiful sunrise, to a cool breeze, to an encouraging note.  The problem is not that God is not active, the problem is that too often we fail to notice.  We fail to train our eyes to see and hear that which is most real and to understand that God most often speaks in the quiet whisper of everyday experiences.  When we slow down our lives enough to see and hear we will recognize that God is active every single day in amazing ways and we will smile and rejoice when we see his presence around us.
